  1. A decomposer in biology, is any organism that
  2. breaks down dead matter. Decomposers play a 
  3. vital role in the ecosystem by freeing 
  4. important chemical substances, such as 
  5. nitrogen compounds, locked up in dead 
  6. organisms or excrement. They feed on some of
  7. the released organic matter, but leave the 
  8. rest to filter back into the soil or pass in
  9. gas form into the atmosphere. The principal
  10. decomposers are bacteria and fungi, but 
  11. earthworms and many other invertebrates are
  12. often included in this group.
